Religion and World Views
Intent:
At Dartmoor Multi-Academy Trust, children have the opportunity to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. Pupils will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religions and worldviews, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. Through our Religious Education curriculum we aim for children to have a knowledge of a variety of religions and diverse perspectives. We also aim to encourage children to express their thoughts and insights regarding different beliefs and interpretations. Finally, we aim for children to have time to inquire into and respond to various questions pertaining to their own beliefs or the beliefs of the community.
Impact:
Effective teaching of Religion and World Views is widely acknowledged to promote inclusivity as it aids children in developing into respectful and culturally aware citizens in our diverse society and the broader world. Our Ethos is one of inclusiveness and open mindedness, ensuring that our lessons aim to foster learning, empathy, and personal expression without seeking to persuade.
Implementation:
To teach RW we use the Devon and Torbay agreed syllabus with support from the NATRE (National Association of Teachers of Religious Education).
Our teaching is based around three key areas of making sense of beliefs, making sense of connections between people and the Impact this has upon individuals, communities and the wider world.
We put significant effort into the development of vocabulary acquisition. Children receive subject specific language teaching enabling them to effectively communicate their understanding.
By explicitly teaching subject-specific language, we empower students to communicate their ideas and interpretations more effectively. It equips them with the necessary tools to engage in meaningful discussions, written reflections, and critical analysis of religious and worldviews topics. Furthermore, a strong foundation in vocabulary ensures that students can comprehend and engage with complex texts and resources related to religious and cultural studies.
